The Prettiest

Hello everyone! Hopefully you enjoy this poem I wrote…

***

The Prettiest

I once thought the sun was the prettiest

With her dramatic exits and entrances

Her palette full of oranges and pinks

Yellows, blues, and purples

I once thought the stars were the prettiest

blinking like diamonds on rich blue-black fabric

with their sprawling drawings in the sky

utterly infinite and full of hidden dimensions

I once thought the earth was the prettiest

forming snow-capped peaks and deep valleys

Green and red and brown

weaving thick vines and sweeping forests

I once thought the ocean was the prettiest

With all his different blues;

turquoise and cerulean, navy and sometimes greenish

With his endless depths and crushing waves

I once thought fire was the prettiest

With her flickering tongues of flame

shifting from blue to orange to yellow to a color I can’t name

how she can be cozy and deadly

I once thought fog was the prettiest

his soft fingers brushing your face as you walk

his vague tendrils swirling around your body

his color as defined as your iris or as faint as the thin veins in your eyes

They are all indescribably beautiful

and they all live in my mind

feeding off memories and pictures

weaving a tapestry of imagery

But I know now that the moon is the most breathtaking

Her silent grace watching over everything and nothing

She comes and goes, powerful in her silence

Going through every phase

like clockwork

She is always whole

Even when she doesn’t appear to be

She commands the tides

And she is so far away, so distant

Yet always right there
