The Prettiest

Hello everyone! Hopefully you enjoy this poem I wrote…

***

The Prettiest

I once thought the sun was the prettiest

With her dramatic exits and entrances

Her palette full of oranges and pinks

Yellows, blues, and purples

I once thought the stars were the prettiest

blinking like diamonds on rich blue-black fabric

with their sprawling drawings in the sky

utterly infinite and full of hidden dimensions

I once thought the earth was the prettiest

forming snow-capped peaks and deep valleys

Green and red and brown

weaving thick vines and sweeping forests

I once thought the ocean was the prettiest

With all his different blues;

turquoise and cerulean, navy and sometimes greenish

With his endless depths and crushing waves

I once thought fire was the prettiest

With her flickering tongues of flame

shifting from blue to orange to yellow to a color I can’t name

how she can be cozy and deadly

I once thought fog was the prettiest

his soft fingers brushing your face as you walk

his vague tendrils swirling around your body

his color as defined as your iris or as faint as the thin veins in your eyes

They are all indescribably beautiful

and they all live in my mind

feeding off memories and pictures

weaving a tapestry of imagery

But I know now that the moon is the most breathtaking

Her silent grace watching over everything and nothing

She comes and goes, powerful in her silence

Going through every phase

like clockwork

She is always whole

Even when she doesn’t appear to be

She commands the tides

And she is so far away, so distant

Yet always right there

5 Favorite Things About Winter

Hey everyone! Sorry it’s been so long! I’ve been really busy with school and winter break. Hope you like this post; my 5 favorite things about winter. 🙂🙌

  1. The snow. Up here in Chicago, we just got our first snow that sticks on the ground last week, and it’s still here. I love watching the snow out the window because we have a big pine tree in our front yard that looks really pretty with snow hanging off it. Sometimes it’s fun to shovel and play in too. I especially love when it’s brand new and it’s soft but sounds cool when you step on it. 🌨❄
We drove to Milwaukee before the snowstorm, and the way back had a bunch of snow-covered trees like this!

2. The holidays. Especially starting from late November all the way until mid-January, because some people leave their Christmas decorations up that long. I love this time of year because it’s fun to drive through our neighborhood at night and look at all the lights. And since Christmas is a time of giving, it’s fun to shop for presents, because all of our malls are all decked out for the holiday season. (well the HIP mall I know was, I don’t know about the others. I did my Xmas shopping at the HIP so I know that for a fact…anyways let’s just move on.) 🎄🕯

Half of our tree its covered in homemade ornaments!

3. Sweatpants. At wintertime, I finally get to break out my sweatpants, which are the most comfiest things I own. I love sweatpants because they’re so cozy and I live in them half the time. 👖👍

yes I know these aren’t sweatpants, I just typed in “cozy” and this came up.

4. Hot drinks. During the wintertime, it’s so much fun to curl up with some tea, hot chocolate, cider, or coffee and a book and read the day away. My favorite hot drink has to be peppermint hot cocoa, and I like to pick out a thick book and put on some socks and sweatpants and just read. (I just rearranged my bookshelf and got rid of a whole segment of books, so now I have a bunch of room! Bow down, you’ve met your match. Bonus: I also found my vaccine card; it’s been missing for months. Whoops!)☕🍵

Comment down below your favorite hot drink! P.S. Soon I might do a story rewrite 😉

5. Winter activies (and sometimes the Olympics!). One fun part of winter is the activities. Though I’ve never been skiing, I have been sledding and ice skating, but there’s also snowshoeing, snowboarding, and zoo lights. (You might be sensing a theme, what can I say? We Midwesterners/Northerners like our snow). And every few years the Winter Olympics happen. If Covid allows, we can look forward to the 2022 Winter Olympics, held in Beijing, China. ⛷🛷

One of my best friends is a great figure skater!! Props to you Angelina!

Hope you enjoyed my post! Sorry again that it’s been awhile! Have a great January!

Veterans Day

Hello everyone. I hope you enjoyed your week.

I would like everyone to take a moment of silence to honor all the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, especially those who lost their lives.

***

Though some had no choice, or did not believe in the cause they were fighting for, all were the bravest people in the world. No matter the year or the weaponry available, all soldiers have one thing in common: courage.

Being brave doesn’t mean being arrogant. It doesn’t mean throwing away your life. It means when given the choice between right and easy, they chose right. You don’t have to be big and strong to be courageous. As long as your heart is true you are brave.

Whether you are crawling under barbed wire or making guns, you are helping your country and being as patriotic as one could be.

Thank you to the Air Force, for keeping our skies safe. The air is where no human should be, and yet you were brave enough to take to the plane.

Thank you to the Navy, for keeping our waters safe. The ocean is wild and reckless, and yet you were brave enough to go onto that blue desert to protect your country.

Thank you to the SEALS, for being our elite super-soldiers. The SEALS are like our own Avengers, and you face so many hardships in your training and everyday. Thank you.

Thank you to the Marines for protecting our steel boats and the U.S. ports and docks. You are brave for facing the soldiers on foot when you are trained for the water.

Thank you to the army, for being our cavalry. You guys had no metal to fly or sail, but you had to face the ground without anything to back you up. Thank you for marching into unknown territory with 40kg pounds on your back to protect the U.S.

Thank you to the Space Force, for being brave enough to join a very new branch of the Armed Forces. Thank you for helping us still be one foot in the Space Race, and letting the atmosphere and beyond be secure.

Happy Veterans Day.

Have a great weekend!

Poem: War

Hey everyone! Sorry, I’ve been so busy with school. Tomorrow I’m going to a Homecoming dance, so I’ve got something to look forward to this weekend. Here’s another poem, enjoy!!😀

***

Battles and death

Is this what those

Leaders in a cold room

Wish for?

People fighting for a cause

They have no interest in

Sent to their deaths

Killing innocent people

No one is the enemy

Except the leaders in their halls

No war really ends

Because no peace ever exists

There’s only the illusion of it

Masked voices and the secrets

Kept safe with the dead

For what?

They make terrible weapons

Amass great armies

But no one ever tries

To make peace

Families torn apart

Villages emptied

Unanswered letters

From your father or mother

War is the worst

Because it not only kills people

It scars the survivors

And destroys the illusion of peace

***

I hope you all have a great week/weekend. Thank you so much for all the support! 😙

A Poem: Why did you leave me?

Hello everyone! Today I’m sharing a poem I wrote last night, I hope you enjoy! 🙂

***

A pained sound fell from your lips

Red spilled from the point of the sword

That pierced your body

To you I ran towards

My bow clattered on the stone as I hurried

Closer to your falling body

We all cry out, but me the loudest

At first, I hated you

But now I love you and you are

Slipping away from me

I brushed your golden hair from your eyes

My tears dripping onto your face

Salty water slid into your pointy ears

I held you

Held you as you died in my arms

When you took your last breath

I squeezed you as you grew cold

Why did you leave me here

Here in this stone tomb

I don’t want to go on

The one you were in love with tries to pull me away

But I don’t let go of you

I want to carry you to your rightful home

The city of pure light

Why did you go where I can’t follow?

The grey plains of death

Full of beautiful trees and peace

Where your enemies can’t find you

I wish I could have saved you

But your cold body is in my arms and you’re dead

I lost you and I couldn’t do anything

I’m sorry, so sorry, golden haired best friend.

I hope you enjoyed the poem, have a great day! 😀

Twilight: Book Review

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed last week’s book review. Today I’m doing Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.

Let’s get into it.

Twilight (The Twilight Saga, #1) by Stephenie Meyer

Rating: 0.5 out of 5.

YA

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Romance, Supernatural

I give Twilight 0.5 out of 5 stars.

Before I explain why, let me give you a summary.

Bella Swan, a seventeen year old girl moves back to her birthplace of Forks, Washington for Phoenix, Arizona. It’s a rainy town in the Pacific Northwest. Bella describes herself as unattractive and very clumsy.

She meets a mysterious man named Edward Cullen and slowly falls in love with him. It turns out Edward is a vampire that only drinks animal blood. One day, a group of bad vampires that do drink human blood roll into town. Can Edward save her?

What happens next?

Now I’m going to go into why I give it 0.5 stars.

First of all. There is absolutely no plot whatsoever. If you take out the cheesy love triangle it’s just about a girl who moves to a rainy town. The storyline is mildly creative, I suppose, but still cheesy. It seems like Ms. Meyer just wanted to write a romance novel and didn’t care what it took to get it published. Unfortunately pulpy romance added with vampires and werewolves is very popular for a reason I will never understand.

Second. The writing style is terrible. It’s supposed to be YA but reads like one of those kindergarten practice books. Even I could write it better. I think if it was written more like The Mortal Instruments, or even the Divergent series, but nothing else was changed, it would get 2 stars.

Next. Bella Swan is terrible. She’s a horrible role model. She always needs Edward to do stuff for her. Her “clumsiness” is very exaggerated. Bella describes herself as unattractive when she actually is obviously very pretty. Her whole life revolves around boys and the attitude she has towards them. For example Bella thinks she isn’t complete without one. She’s weak and relies on Edward for everything. For all she talks about independence, she’s very reliable on other people. It’s sort of anti-feminist, though Bella seems feminist at first glance.

Fourth. Twilight talks about mental health in a degrading way. It speaks of depression and other mental health issues in an uneducated way. It’s very unrealistic and hurtful to people with those mental illnesses.

Lastly, Edward is toxic and a bad boyfriend. He’s downright creepy. Edward climbs into Bella’s window and watches her sleep. Um…WHAT? And the weird part is, Bella’s completely okay with that. He also purposely breaks her truck so she has to rely on him. Besides, he’s emotionally unstable and has severe mood swings that could endanger Bella.

Overall, this book is terrible. Please don’t read it. ❌

I hope you enjoyed this, or at least enjoyed how obviously disgusted I was by this book. 🤢

Have a great day, everyone! 👋

City of Bones; Book Review

What’s up, Reporters? It’s your favorite blogger, Abby.

Anyways, today I’m doing another book review for the first book in one of my favorite series; The Mortal Instruments, which is one of many of the series in the Shadowhunters universe.

Let’s jump right in!

Amazon.com: City of Bones (1) (The Mortal Instruments): 9781481455923: Clare, Cassandra: Books
The other five books in the Mortal Instruments are as follows; in chronological order: City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire

Rating: 4 out of 5.

YA

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Romance, Contemporary

I give City of Bones a four out of five.

Before I explain why, here’s a summary:

Clary Fray is nearly sixteen. She’s visiting an all-ages club with her best friend Simon, when she witnesses a strange trio of teens murder a boy. Worse yet; no one else sees it. What could this mean?

When Clary confronts them, they explain to her that the victim wasn’t human; and they aren’t entirely either. But these teens would like to know how suddenly a mundane, a mundie, like her can suddenly see them. The Shadowhunters, aka the teens, take Clary back to their house and Clary meets a boy named Jace. She’s pretty confused as to what’s happening, and Jace is just the most annoying type of guy; snarky, sarcastic, and arrogant.

What happens next? You’ll have to read to find out.

So essentially, this book is written for teens. There’s no way around that. It’s not a book targeting adults. Sure, adults can read it, but they might not enjoy it in the way teens will. It’s also not a book for younger kids. There’s some slightly mature themes and some violence.

Now back to why I rate it 4 stars.

City of Bones is pretty well written. It has a good plot and keeps you engaged the whole time. The character development is believable and the people in the book are well described. It’s realistic.

However, if you really read between the lines, it can be a little bad fanfiction-ey. For example, the Mortal Cup, the Mortal Sword, and the Mortal Mirror (The Mortal Instruments) can be compared to the Goblet of Fire, the Sword of Gryffindor, and the Pensieve from Harry Potter, as well as how there’s three of them gifted by an archangel, very similar to the Deathly Hallows.

One or two of the characters are overused stereotypical hot guys at first. For example Jace, at first seems like a trope often used in fanfiction, as is Alec, the other guy main character.

However, it took me a while to realize that, and like I said you really have to read between the lines to notice it.

I really do love the Shadowhunters books, though my favorite series from it is The Infernal Devices, followed by The Dark Artifices.

Cassandra Clare’s world is an urban fantasy Middle-earth, written over the course of fourteen years. It’s not even done yet.

Here’s a few links if you want to get into it:

Thank you for reading my book review, and except another next week. It’s easy for me to write these, so when I’m short on time I will just look at my bookshelf and pick one out to review. 📖

Next week I’m reviewing Twilight, which is NOT on my bookshelf. 🤢

Have a great day! 🙌

I Can Feel the Ghosts: A Sad Short Story 🌧

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been so busy with school. This story’s kind of old, but I hope you enjoy! ⏰

***

Patty sat with her glasses perched on the bridge of her nose, reading Pride and Prejudice. She was immersed fully in reading, and though she’d read it several times in her long life, she wasn’t sure what to do with all the time on her hands. She’d recently retired, and though she liked not working, it was very different.

Outside snow was falling heavily, the thick, wet kind of snow that squished unpleasantly when you walked. It was misery to be caught outside in it, and Patty was grateful that she got to sit inside with her steaming mug of tea.

She was wearing a comfortable flannel dress and had her hair tied up in a plait. Patty glanced around at her comfortable living room. It was well lit and cheerful. She felt very relaxed sitting inside with her tea and her book. Or at least until she heard the pounding at the door.

Patty sat up, marking her place in her book. Who could it be? It was Sunday, she wasn’t expecting any packages. She hadn’t invited anyone.

Should she answer? She’d heard stories about murderers and molesters attacking old women on days a lot like this. She cautiously glanced out the peephole and relaxed. It wasn’t a murderer, just a snow-caked figure.

Patty unlatched her door and flung the door open. She hunched against the cold breeze and asked “Who are you?”

She could see now that it was a young girl, maybe fourteen or fifteen. Her eyes were rimmed with red, most likely from the cold. Her dark hair was coated with snow and her red wool coat almost looked white. The girl replied in a shaky voice. “I was staying at a friend’s house, but she kicked me out. We’re not really friends now, because of that. My parents are out in Wisconsin, and since we’re in Michigan, they can’t just come home. I’ve seen you picking weeds and I thought maybe it would be okay if I knocked.” The girl shivered, and Patty could see her lips were tinged blue. She was hunched up against the cold as if she had been outside a long time.

Patty softened. “Come inside. I don’t want you freezing to death.”

The girl stepped inside and pulled off her boots and jacket. She shook out her head outside and slammed the door. Patty watched her lock the door and set down a duffel bag Patty hadn’t noticed before.

Patty led her into the living room and moved her book. The girl sat down and Patty draped her in the softest blanket she owned. Then she sat in her yellow armchair.

“Tell me your name.”

“Sofie.” she said, staring at her wet socks. She took them off and draped them on the radiator next to the couch.

Patty stared at her for a second. “Sofie, can I ask what happened with your friend?”

Sofie snapped her gaze back to the old woman and stared at her round face. Patty had crow’s feet and dark skin, and something about her face made you want to trust her.

Sofie was silent and her eyes were sad. “I will, but first, can I ask you a few things?”

“Of course, dear.” Patty said, stepping into the kitchen to make the cold girl hot chocolate. “I’m right here.”

“What’s your name?”

“Patty.”

“Are you going to murder me, torture me, or hurt me in any way?”

“Of course not. In fact, I thought you were a murderer before I opened the door.” Patty smiled, heating up the milk and cocoa powder.

Sofie laughed, but Patty could hear her teeth chattering. “How old are you?” she asked with an air of finality. This would be the last question.

Patty chuckled. She didn’t mind, but some adults did. “66. I just retired last year.”

Sofie asked one more question. “Can I stay at your house for the next few days until my parents get home?”

“Yes, I have a guest bedroom where my daughter used to live. But you have to tell me about your friend. And we have to tell your parents where you’re staying.” Patty replied, handing Sofie the hot chocolate. Patty’s lip wobbled. It was still painful to mention her daughter, even after all this time.

Sofie nodded. The snow had melted from her hair and now her long, thick, hair was damp and hung in ringlets. Her skin was tan and she had clever dark eyes. Patty’s heart ached. Sofie looked a lot like her daughter, though her skin was a few shades lighter. “What’s your daughter’s name?”

“Evelyn.” Patty replied, sitting next to Sofie and wrapping her arm around her.

“What is she like?” Sofie said, sipping her drink.

“Smart. She was creative, always doing so many things at once. She had a lot of friends. Especially in high school.”

Sofie furrowed her eyebrows. “Was?”

“She died.” Patty whispered, tears filling her eyes.

Sofie looked stricken. “How? Is it fine to ask?”

“That’s okay. Everyone is curious. She was driving with her boyfriend, on a night just like this, the night after she graduated from college about fifteen years ago. A car came out of nowhere and slammed into them. The cops said he tried to stop but the roads were slick. They slammed into a ditch. She died instantly. Her neck broke, but he fell into a coma. Died a few hours later. The other driver tried to apologize, saying he couldn’t sleep at night, knowing he’d as good as killed them. But it wasn’t enough. He wasn’t being careful, and my daughter died.” Patty was crying now, tears streaming down her cheeks. She pressed a hand to her mouth to muffle the sobs. She’d never said it out loud before.

Sofie hugged the old woman and said “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Patty pulled herself together. “It’s okay. That’s her, that picture on the bookshelf.” she said softly, pointing.

Sofie stared at the picture. It was a picture of Evelyn laughing with her best friend. Her dark brown eyes were staring at the camera, and she was holding an ice cream cone. Her dark hair was cropped short. The picture had been taken a few years before she died, in her senior year of high school. “She looks a lot like me. Except her skin is a bit darker. What about her father?” said Sofie.

“He committed suicide when Evelyn was about a year old. I don’t know why. Now everyone I love is dead. Even my sister. She died a year or so ago.”

Sofie snuggled closer to the woman. Her lips were back to a normal color. “I’m sorry Patty. Could you love me one day? Like a grandchild? I don’t really have a grandmother.”

“Yes, I think so.” Patty said, smiling. “Now, please, tell me what happened with your friend.”

Sofie sighed. “It hadn’t been going well for a while. Jill, the friend, and I have been friends since we were in kindergarten, but when we started 9th grade, she started acting…different. She started wearing makeup, different clothes. At first I didn’t mind. It was her style. Then I noticed she was dressing like the popular kids. One day in the lunchroom, I saw Jill sitting with them. Since I don’t have any other friends, I went over to them. Jill looked at me, and she was wearing these big hoops and her hair was really styled. The expensive kind of styled. Like from the salon. She always said that the salon was overrated, so I didn’t understand.”

Patty nodded. Sofie drained her cup and put it on the coffee table.

“I asked if I could sit with them. Jill looked at me almost as if I wasn’t her best friend ever. She said ‘No, you have to be someone to sit here.’ I stood there trying to think of a response and finally said ‘I exist. I’m made of atoms, same as you.’ I can still hear that laugh. High pitched and cold, just like Bellatrix’s laugh from Harry Potter.”

Patty added “Evelyn would have said the same thing.” Gosh, no one wanted to hear about her dead daughter! Sofie only smiled appreciatively and continued.

“So I walked away and sat at our old table by myself. I felt like a jerk, but I didn’t do anything wrong. Or so I thought. The next day, before class, Jill and I were in the girl’s bathroom. She said in her old voice ‘Sofie, there’s a social order. You can’t look like that and hang out with us. If you don’t act like such a nerd, we can still hang out after school. Try to understand.’ I nodded. I didn’t want to lose her. Even though she talked the way she usually did, I didn’t recognize her at all. I couldn’t stop thinking about the girl who I used to know. The one that used to wear her Star Wars and Lord of the Rings T-shirts, and other ‘nerdy’ things. Who used to read a book a day when she could.” Sofie put ‘nerdy’ in finger quotes.

Patty could hear that odd lightness to Sofie’s voice that she herself used when she was trying not to cry. She’d used it when she was talking about Evelyn’s death.

“So I tolerated it. She ignored me at school but was almost her old self after school. Almost. But she spent less time on the phone with me, and I could feel the tension when we would talk to each other. I kept wondering what I had done wrong.”

Sofie stopped and Patty could see her shoulders shaking. “You didn’t do a single thing wrong.” Patty said soothingly. “Not a single thing.”

Sofie resumed, and there were tears in her eyes. “This was my best friend. She taught me so many things, like how to use Photoshop and how to ride my bike. And she was so different. So it went on like that until today. I was staying at her house when my parents were out of town. We got into a huge fight, and she said a lot of nasty things, finally telling me to go. So I packed up and left. The first place I thought of was here, so I walked here and well…you know the rest.”

Sofie started crying, and she wiped her eyes quickly. Patty said quietly “It’s okay to cry, sweetheart. It’s okay.”

So Sofie cried for a little while, and Patty knew she loved her already. This poor child. And yes, she did remind her of Evelyn, but she was her own person. Sofie was more sensitive, and Evelyn refused to read or watch Harry Potter up until the night she died. Suddenly Patty was sobbing too. She cried for her husband, for Evelyn, for Sofie, for her sister.

Sofie stopped crying and asked tentatively “Can we watch a horror movie? I need something distracting. Please?”

Patty laughed, wiping her tears away. “I love horror movies.” Evelyn had hated them, so she was glad that Sofie liked them.

“Can I pick one out?”

“Yes. Let me call your parents. Do you have their number?”

“Yeah.” Sofie crossed to the DVD bin and grinned. “I love watching DVDs. I don’t like digital movies as much.” She repeated her mother’s number and Patty dialed.

“Me neither! It makes it so complicated!” Patty exclaimed when she’d explained to Sofie’s parents the situation, that Jill had kicked Sofie out, leaving out other details. They were okay with the arrangement.

Patty sat down on the couch and fingered the remote. Sofie held up a DVD. “Can we watch IT? It’s so good! And the book is terrifying.”

“Good idea! I haven’t seen that one in a while.” Patty replied, patting the couch.

As they watched, Patty felt something in her chest, a sense of calm, that she hadn’t felt since the night of Evelyn’s graduation.

One Year Anniversary Blog Post Special! 🎉

Hello Reporters!! The Abby Report has officially been around for a year!! 🎈🎉🎊🎆🎇

Happy Anniversary Signage
I can’t believe it’s already been a year!

YAY!! So to celebrate, I decided to put together a special post. I asked six people the same question.

The question is “When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

The answers are honest, heartwarming, and 100% wholesome.

***

Pam

What do you do for fun?

For fun I like to do yoga, walk and talk with my friends, and most of all love on my grandchildren.

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

It’s been 45 years but I think I knew that I was truly in love when I realized he was the one I most enjoyed spending time with, traveling, playing games, and lots of laughing together. I think I also was realizing that he loved me too so I was able to just be myself, know that I was safe and had found my life partner.

Bill

What do you do for fun?

Play with my grandchildren, golf, travel and read.

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

Our love developed over a period of time. At some point I realized that we enjoyed most of the same things (sharing a meal, going to a movie, a concert, a sporting event, and spending time with our families).  Almost forty-five years later we still enjoy the same things, especially spending time with our grandchildren.

Chris

What do you do for fun?

Play board games, play trivia games, listen to music, watch football, hang out with friends (maybe over the fire pit, or at a restaurant/pub) — less of the last item on the list since the pandemic… it would be especially fun now!

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

We had been dating for a little over 3 months, and we were getting ready to take a weekend trip to Washington, D.C.  I know I said “I love you” to her for the first time on that trip.

Anna

What do you do for fun?

I love to play soccer (when I can!) And go to dinner with friends 🙂

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

It was almost love at first sight with Adam (current husband). We went on a few dates and I fell in love with his character and quiet confidence very early. Maybe 1-2 months after meeting? I told him I loved him 4-5 months after dating.

Mary Katherine

What do you do for fun?

Travelling to new places, kickboxing, trail runs/walks with my dogs, and spending time with friends and family.

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

When I realized I couldn’t imagine my life without them.

Kimberly

What do you do for fun?

Read, write, horseback ride, take my boys on adventures.

When did you realize you were in love with your current or last partner?

We were at the beach together, and he very nervously told me he loved me, so quietly I could not quite hear what he said, but I felt like kissing him so I did. Later I realized what he had said and knew I loved him too, so I told him.

I conducted the survey via e-mail, so I couldn’t see people’s facial expressions, which would have been nice. Ah well. #blameCovid

Anyways, hope you enjoyed the post.

Some Changes to The Abby Report:
